At Greater Outdoor Adventures we find that Creek Rafting is both a fun and exciting alternative for experienced rafters. If you have rafted plenty of rivers and want something challenging come and try a creek rafting adventure! Creeks are water dependant and generally run highest in the spring, during and after major storms, keep an eye on the weather or call us and let us know you are interested and we will watch it for you and contact you when the water rises!
The Creeks (not just for kayaking any more!)
The Big Laurel This section of Big Laurel Creek in North Carolina is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. With Rapids called “Sudsy Hole”, “Stair Steps”, and “The first Rapid”. This is a pretty decent length section, we can easily run it on an afternoon. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. As an Extra incentive we get to paddle the two class IV’s on the French Broad where the Big Laurel and French Broad become one. Wilsons Creek This stretch of Wilson Creek in Avery/Caldwell County is 5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Upper Wilson stretch is just one of many. Wilsons Creek Features rapids named “Schoolhouse”, “Ten Foot Falls”, and “Triple Drop”. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. Spring Creek The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The Route 1171 to Hot Springs stretch of Spring Creek in North Carolina is 7 miles long and is a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. With such Rapids as “Do Drop In” and Town Falls”. This is a constant moving technical creek, exciting, challenging and fun an adventure you will not soon forget |

The Nolichucky Rafting in the Tri-cities Tennessee The Nolichucky is in an incredibly beautiful, deep, mountain gorge that offers lots of great play, especially within the first few miles. The punch is at the beginning, then it mellows out to a mostly class III run allowing ample opportunity to enjoy the scenery. The gorge is remote with the only opportunity to walk out by a railroad track that parallels the river White water rafting on the Nolichucky River is an experience that challenges rafters with wavy rapids in an impressive wilderness setting. The Unaka Mountains provide an incredible backdrop as you paddle from North Carolina into Tennessee in the steepest river gorge east of the Mississippi. With Rapids such as “On the rocks”, “Quarter Mile” (a quarter mile of class IV Rapids) and “Rooster Tail”. This is the trip that offers Beauty and excitement for everyone to enjoy.
Greater Outdoor Adventures runs the smallest, most intimate rafting trips on the Nolichucky River, allowing you and your group to fully absorb the experience. Because the Nolichucky is a free-flowing river, water levels are subject to change by the day. At each level, the river takes on a particular personality. This is one of the reasons we love to raft the Nolichucky River so much.
The French Broad Rafting near Asheville, North Carolina and Newport Tennessee Section 9 of the French Broad whitewater rafting trips take you down the world's third oldest river and is a great adventure to add to your list. The stately French Broad flows through scenic Pisgah National Forest in the mountains of North Carolina, and is ideal for families and young teens. On French Broad River rafting trips, you can expect moderate Class II and III rapids that are splashy and fun. The full-day trip option adds the percussive, Class IV Frank Bell's Rapid, a river-wide, bouncy drop and Needles Falls which is a two tiered drop.
The Del Rio Section of the French Broad River just 50 minutes from Gatlinburg is a six mile float trip with 1 class III rapid referred to as “Big Log Ledge”, Perfect for those families with young children, older adults or those just wanting to enjoy the scenery. a great alternate for those who have already rafted the Pigeon River.
The New River Rafting in West Virginia The New is divided into two white water rafting sections.
The Upper New River is the mildest of our trips. Our guests find the Upper New River a relaxing way to spend the day in beautiful West Virginia. This section of river is perfect for introducing young people to the world of white water. The Upper New River features Class I - Class III Rapids.
The Lower New River is big step up from the Upper New. The rocks, gradient and narrowing of the canyon walls in the New River Gorge create some of the biggest and best white water rafting to be found in the United States. The Lower New has been called "The Grand Canyon of the East" The Lower New River features rapids rated from Class II to Class V. As water rises this run intensifies and these ratings can increase.
The Gauley River Rafting in West Virginia The Gauley is beloved for its annual fall releases from Summersville Dam. The Gauley is the number 1 Rated river on the East coast, # 3 in the country and # 6 in the world and attracts white water rafting enthusiasts from around the globe. This rugged and beautiful canyon produces a guaranteed rafting flow for only 22 days per year. Like the New, the Gauley River is divided into two sections.
The Lower Gauley River is the most beautiful river runs in West Virginia. Steep gorge walls and lush foliage make a stunning wilderness backdrop for this technical run with numerous rapids rated from Class II - Class V.
The Upper Gauley River represents the pinnacle of white water rafting on the east coast. The Upper Gauley cuts a path through some amazing terrain. Several small waterfalls spill into the river and it's volume can increase at the confluence of the Meadow River. Continuous, demanding, and requiring strong teamwork, and features rapids called “Iron Ring”, “Pillow Rock” and “Sweets Falls” rated Class III - Class V. If this trip is too intense for all members of your adventure, those wanting to watch the action can always hike in with our photographer to pillow rock!!
The Cheoah The Cheoah River challenges whitewater enthusiasts with and nine miles of exciting paddling! This is one of the most intense white water adventures we have to offer, recommended for experienced paddlers only. Class III-V Rapids such as “Bear Creek Falls”, “Yard Sale” and “Gods Damn”. The Cheoah is Unique in its hydraulics, and wave trains, it is both a steep Southern creek, then suddenly a fun, wavy ride, similar to big rivers out West. White water rafting on the Cheoah River is the perfect challenge for our most adventurous guests. 2010 release dates April 10, 24 May 8,22,23 June 26,27 September 18 October 2
